A Sketch for Johannes Vermeer
A visit to Rotterdam in 1998, followed by a residency at Het
Wilde Weten Artists' Studios in Rotterdam in 1999, enabled me to make extended
visits to the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum and the Mauritshaus in Den Haag (as
well as the beach at Scheveningen, that W.G Sebald writes in The Rings of Saturn: In Scheveningen, where
I had hoped to be able to see the sea from a distance, I walked for a long time
in the shadow of tall apartment blocks, as if at the bottom of a ravine...)
